A cover is not needed unless you are running a manual shaking. Covers with rings have a center wire finger loop to help remove the cover from the top of the sieve.
Extended rim pans have a stacking skirt permitting another sieve or a stack of sieves to fit underneath. This feature allows two or more samples to be run simultaneously in the sieve shaker.
